The best time to visit Crete for most travellers is from mid-May to late June or from September to mid-October. In those months the sea is warm enough for swimming, the gorges are open, and the roads, beaches and archaeological sites are far less crowded than in July and August. Spring (April and May) is the best season for hiking and wildflowers, high summer is for pure beach holidays, and winter suits city breaks, food and walking rather than swimming.

## Quick facts

- **Best overall:** late May, June, September and early October.
- **Warmest sea:** August and September, around 25°C on the north coast.
- **Best for hiking:** April, May and October.
- **Busiest and most expensive:** mid-July to late August.
- **Quietest:** November to March, when many resort hotels close.
- **Easter 2027:** Greek Orthodox Easter falls on 2 May 2027.

## Crete weather at a glance

Crete is the most southerly large Greek island and one of the sunniest places in Europe. Summers are long, hot and almost rainless; winters are mild on the coast but wet and snowy in the mountains, where the White Mountains and Mount Psiloritis often keep snow into spring. The south coast, facing Africa across the Libyan Sea, is usually a couple of degrees warmer than the north. In July and August the north coast is often hit by the meltemi, a strong north wind that cools the air but makes the sea rough.

The figures below are long-term averages for Heraklion on the north coast. Treat them as a guide, as individual years vary.

| Month | Average high | Average low | Sea | Rainy days |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| January | 14°C | 7°C | 16°C | 12 |
| February | 14°C | 8°C | 15°C | 11 |
| March | 15°C | 8°C | 15°C | 8 |
| April | 19°C | 11°C | 16°C | 5 |
| May | 23°C | 14°C | 19°C | 3 |
| June | 27°C | 18°C | 22°C | 1 |
| July | 28°C | 20°C | 25°C | 0 |
| August | 28°C | 20°C | 25°C | 0 |
| September | 25°C | 18°C | 24°C | 1 |
| October | 22°C | 15°C | 22°C | 5 |
| November | 19°C | 12°C | 20°C | 8 |
| December | 15°C | 9°C | 18°C | 12 |

Inland and in the south, summer afternoons are often much hotter than these coastal averages, and heatwaves above 35°C are increasingly common in July and August.

## Crete month by month

### January and February

The quietest months. It is green, often rainy and sometimes stormy, with snow on the peaks. Most beach hotels are closed, but Chania, Rethymno, Heraklion and Agios Nikolaos are lively working towns with open tavernas, museums and cafes. This is the season for oranges, wild greens and hearty Cretan cooking. Good for: city breaks, museums, low prices.

### March

Spring starts to show, with almond blossom and the first wildflowers. Carnival season peaks before Clean Monday (15 March in 2027), and Rethymno holds the largest carnival on the island, with parades and street parties. The sea is still cold at around 15°C. Good for: carnival, early walks, quiet sites.

### April

One of the most beautiful months. Hillsides are covered in flowers and wild orchids, temperatures are ideal for walking, and archaeological sites such as Knossos and Phaistos are comfortable to explore. Many hotels open in April. Swimming is only for the brave. Good for: hiking, photography, archaeology.

### May

Arguably the best month for a varied trip. Days reach the low to mid twenties, the sea warms to around 19°C by the end of the month, and the landscape is still green. The [Samaria Gorge](https://theauthenticgreece.com/samaria-gorge/) opens for the season, usually in May (in 2026 it opened on 19 May). Greek Orthodox Easter falls on 2 May in 2027, and Easter week in Crete brings candlelit processions, midnight services and family feasts; book early for that weekend. The anniversary of the Battle of Crete is commemorated around 20 May, particularly in Chania. Good for: everything except guaranteed hot beach days.

### June

Long, hot, dry days with the sea above 20°C, but without the full crowds of July and August. This is the best month for a beach and sightseeing holiday combined, and the longest days give extra time for road trips. Good for: beaches, families before school holidays, road trips.

### July and August

Peak season. The weather is reliably hot and sunny, the sea is at its warmest, and every resort, beach bar and taverna is open. It is also the most crowded and expensive time: Balos, Elafonisi and Knossos are very busy, roads are congested and rental cars sell out. The meltemi wind can make north coast beaches rough, while south coast bays are often calmer. 15 August, the feast of the Dormition, brings village festivals across Crete and is the busiest single weekend of the year. Good for: pure beach holidays, nightlife, festivals.

### September

Many people’s favourite month. The sea is still around 24°C, the crowds drop after the first week, and prices begin to fall. Grape harvest is under way in the wine villages of Peza and Archanes; our [guide to Cretan wine](https://theauthenticgreece.com/cretan-wine/) explains which wineries to visit. Good for: swimming, couples, food and wine.

### October

Warm days, a sea that is still pleasant for swimming in the first half of the month, and the first autumn rains later on. Hiking season returns as the heat breaks, and the Samaria Gorge usually stays open until the end of the month, weather permitting. Raki distilling (kazanemata) begins in villages, and chestnut festivals are held in the mountain villages of western Crete, notably at Elos. Many resort hotels close at the end of October. Good for: walking, swimming early in the month, village life.

### November and December

Rain becomes more frequent and the days shorter, but there are still many clear, mild days on the coast. The olive harvest starts, the anniversary of the Arkadi Monastery holocaust is commemorated around 8 November, and the towns prepare for Christmas. Beach life is over, but Crete remains a pleasant winter escape compared with northern Europe. Good for: food, olive oil, quiet travel.

## Best time for specific activities

- **Beaches and swimming:** June to early October; see our guide to the [best beaches in Crete](https://theauthenticgreece.com/best-beaches-in-crete/) by region.
- **Hiking and gorges:** April to early June and late September to October. Samaria usually runs from May to October.
- **Sightseeing and archaeology:** April, May, October; in summer go early or late in the day.
- **Families:** June and September offer warm water without peak prices; July and August are hot for small children at midday.
- **Food and wine:** September to November, during the grape, raki and olive seasons.
- **Budget travel:** April, May, October, and winter in the main towns.

## When to avoid Crete

There is no bad time to visit, but there are mismatches. Mid-July to late August is the wrong time if you dislike crowds, heat or high prices. November to March is the wrong time for a beach holiday, and in winter some mountain roads can be affected by snow, flooding or rockfall after storms. Ferries from Piraeus run all year, though schedules are thinner in winter; see our guide to [Greek ferries](https://theauthenticgreece.com/greek-ferries/) if you plan to arrive by sea.

## Practical tips

- **Book early for peak season:** rental cars and well-placed rooms for July and August are often gone by spring.
- **Check Easter dates:** Greek Orthodox Easter often differs from Western Easter; in 2027 it is on 2 May.
- **Plan for the heat:** in summer, schedule sightseeing before 11:00 and after 17:00.
- **Watch the wind:** strong winds can cancel boat trips to Balos and Chrissi; keep a flexible day.
- **Off-season opening hours:** archaeological sites keep shorter winter hours; check the official site of the Ministry of Culture before visiting.
