One week in Crete is enough for a satisfying road trip across the centre and west of the island: Minoan Knossos, the Venetian towns of Rethymno and Chania, a south coast detour, the lagoon at Balos and a gorge walk. The route below uses three bases (Heraklion, Rethymno and Chania) so you never drive more than about two and a half hours in a day. It does not try to cover the whole island; the east is better kept for a second trip or an extra few days.

## Quick facts

- **Route:** Heraklion, Rethymno, Chania, with day trips to the south and west coasts.
- **Bases:** Heraklion (1 night), Rethymno (2 nights), Chania (3 to 4 nights).
- **Total driving:** roughly 700 to 800 km including day trips.
- **Best months:** May, June, September and early October.
- **Flights:** fly into Heraklion and out of Chania (or the reverse) to avoid backtracking.
- **Car:** essential; book a small car with full insurance.

## Before you go: how this itinerary works

Crete is around 260 km from end to end, and journey times on its roads are longer than the distances suggest. This plan follows the north coast from east to west, with two detours across the mountains to the south. It assumes a flight into Heraklion and out of Chania, which is the single best way to save time. If you must return to Heraklion, the drive from Chania takes around two to two and a half hours, so plan an easy final morning. Before you set off, read our tips on [driving in Crete](https://theauthenticgreece.com/driving-in-crete/), including the BOAK motorway roadworks on the north coast in 2026.

## Day 1: Heraklion and Knossos

Pick up your car at Heraklion airport and drive 15 minutes to the city. Spend the late morning at the Heraklion Archaeological Museum, which holds the finest Minoan collection anywhere: the Phaistos Disc, the bull-leaping fresco, the snake goddess figurines and the gold bee pendant from Malia. Seeing the museum before the palace makes Knossos far easier to understand.

In the afternoon, drive 5 km south to the Palace of Knossos. Go after 15:00 in summer, when the tour groups thin out, and allow two hours. Our [Knossos visitor guide](https://theauthenticgreece.com/knossos/) explains the layout and what is original and what is Arthur Evans’s reconstruction. In the evening, walk the Venetian walls or the harbour fortress of Koules, then eat in the lanes around the Lions Fountain and the 1866 market street.

**Overnight:** Heraklion.

## Day 2: Wine villages and Arkadi Monastery to Rethymno

Head south to Archanes, a restored village set among vineyards, for coffee in the square. Several wineries in the Archanes and Peza area welcome visitors for tastings, usually best booked ahead. Then take the national road west towards Rethymno (about 1 hour 15 minutes from Heraklion).

About 23 km before Rethymno, turn inland to the Arkadi Monastery. Its Venetian-style church facade is one of the most photographed in Crete, and in November 1866 hundreds of Cretan defenders and refugees blew up the powder store rather than surrender to the Ottoman army. It is the island’s most important symbol of resistance. Arrive in Rethymno by late afternoon and walk up to the Fortezza for the sunset.

**Overnight:** Rethymno.

## Day 3: Rethymno and the south coast at Preveli

Spend the morning in Rethymno’s old town: the Venetian harbour, the Rimondi Fountain, the Neratze Mosque with its minaret, and the lanes of wooden Ottoman balconies. Our [Rethymno travel guide](https://theauthenticgreece.com/rethymno-travel-guide/) has a full walking route.

After lunch, drive south through the Kourtaliotiko gorge (about 45 minutes) to Preveli. A path leads down from the car park to Preveli beach, where a river lined with palm trees meets the Libyan Sea; it is steep and takes around 20 to 25 minutes each way. Stop at the Preveli Monastery above the coast, which sheltered Allied soldiers during the Second World War. Return via Plakias for an early dinner by the sea, then drive back to Rethymno.

**Overnight:** Rethymno.

## Day 4: Lake Kournas, Apokoronas and Chania

Drive west towards Chania with two easy stops. Lake Kournas, the only natural freshwater lake of any size in Crete, lies just inland from Georgioupoli; you can walk part of the shore or hire a pedal boat. Continue through the Apokoronas villages of Vamos or Gavalochori, with stone houses and village tavernas, and arrive in Chania by mid-afternoon.

Leave the car in a car park outside the old town and spend the evening around the Venetian harbour, the lighthouse and the lanes of Topanas and Splantzia. Our [Chania travel guide](https://theauthenticgreece.com/chania-travel-guide/) covers the old town, the covered market and the best areas to eat.

**Overnight:** Chania.

## Day 5: Balos and Falasarna

Today is a beach day in the far north-west. You can drive to Kalyviani and take the 9 km dirt road to the car park above Balos, then walk down around 20 minutes; or you can take the boat from Kissamos port, which also stops at the Venetian fortress on Imeri Gramvousa. The boat is easier on your rental car and your nerves. Read our [guide to Balos lagoon](https://theauthenticgreece.com/balos-lagoon/) for timings and the pros and cons of each option.

In the afternoon, drive to Falasarna on the west coast for a swim and the sunset, one of the best on the island. Return to Chania in about an hour.

**Alternative:** swap Balos for Elafonisi, with its pink-tinted sand and shallow lagoon in the south-west corner. It is around 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours from Chania each way, so you cannot combine it easily with Balos on the same day.

**Overnight:** Chania.

## Day 6: Samaria Gorge or Imbros Gorge

From roughly May to October, walk the [Samaria Gorge](https://theauthenticgreece.com/samaria-gorge/): around 16 km downhill from Xyloskalo on the Omalos plateau to Agia Roumeli on the south coast, which has no road. You then take a ferry to Chora Sfakion or Sougia and a bus back. Leaving the car in Chania and using an organised day trip or the public bus is the simplest option, because the walk is one-way. Plan a full day and leave early. In 2026 the gorge opened for the season on 19 May; opening dates vary, so check before you go.

If Samaria is closed, or you want something shorter, drive to Imbros on the road to Chora Sfakion and walk the Imbros Gorge, around 8 km and two to three hours downhill to Komitades. Local taxis shuttle walkers back to the start. Finish with a swim at Frangokastello below its Venetian castle, then drive back to Chania across the Askyfou plateau.

**Overnight:** Chania.

## Day 7: Akrotiri and departure

If you fly out of Chania, spend the morning on the Akrotiri peninsula close to the airport. Visit the Venizelos graves on the hill above the city for the view, the Agia Triada monastery, a working monastery with a winery and olive oil, and the beach at Seitan Limania if the sea is calm. Have a last lunch of Cretan dishes such as dakos, kalitsounia and gamopilafo; our [Cretan food guide](https://theauthenticgreece.com/cretan-food/) explains what to order.

If you must fly from Heraklion, leave Chania by mid-morning, allow at least two and a half hours plus a margin for roadworks, and stop for lunch in Rethymno or Bali on the way.

## If you have more time

- **Add two days in the east:** base yourself in Agios Nikolaos or Elounda, take a boat to Spinalonga and drive up to the Lasithi Plateau.
- **Add a south coast night:** stay in Paleochora or Loutro to slow down after the Samaria walk.
- **Add the Messara:** from Heraklion, drive south to Phaistos, Gortyn and Matala beach for a day.

## Practical tips

- **Book accommodation with parking** or near a car park, especially in Chania and Rethymno.
- **Start early in summer:** beaches, gorges and Knossos are far more pleasant before 10:00 or after 16:00.
- **Check rental insurance** before driving the Balos dirt road; many policies exclude tyres and the underside.
- **Carry cash** for village tavernas, beach car parks and sunbeds.
- **Keep one flexible day:** strong winds can cancel boats to Balos or close the gorges.
- **Opening hours change** by season; check Knossos and museum hours on the official site of the Ministry of Culture before your trip.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### Is one week enough for Crete?

One week is enough to see the centre and west properly: Knossos, Rethymno, Chania, the south coast and a gorge walk. It is not enough to see the whole island without spending most of your time driving, so save the east for another trip or add a few days.

### Where should I stay for a week in Crete?

Split the week between Heraklion (one night), Rethymno (two nights) and Chania (three or four nights). If you prefer fewer moves, use only Rethymno and Chania, and visit Knossos on the way from or to Heraklion airport.

### Should I fly into Heraklion or Chania?

For this itinerary, fly into Heraklion and out of Chania, or the reverse. Open-jaw tickets save about two and a half hours of backtracking along the north coast, and one-way car rental between the two airports is common.

### Can I do this itinerary without a car?

Partly. Buses link Heraklion, Rethymno and Chania, and organised trips run to Balos, Elafonisi and the Samaria Gorge. Preveli, Arkadi, Lake Kournas and the Apokoronas villages are much harder to reach by bus.

### What is the best time for a Crete road trip?

May, June, September and early October are best: warm sea, open gorges and less traffic than in July and August. Spring brings wildflowers, but the Samaria Gorge only opens once the season starts, usually in May.
