Elafonisi is a beach and small islet in the far southwest of Crete, famous for its shallow turquoise lagoon and sand tinged pink by crushed shells. It is about 75 km from Chania, a drive of 1.5 to 2 hours, and is part of a protected Natura 2000 area with strict rules on vehicles and building. Go early in the morning or late in the afternoon, wade across to the islet for quieter coves, and leave the pink sand where it is.

## Quick facts

- **Location:** southwest corner of Crete, in the Chania regional unit, near Chrysoskalitissa Monastery.
- **Getting there:** by car from Chania in about 1.5 to 2 hours; a seasonal daily bus from Chania; boats from Paleochora in summer.
- **Parking:** organised car parks behind the beach; a charge of around 3 to 5 euros per day was reported in 2026.
- **Water:** lagoon only knee to waist deep, warm and calm; ideal for small children.
- **Best time:** June and September; arrive before 10:00 or after 16:00 in July and August.
- **Good for:** families, paddling, photography, short walks on the islet.

## Why is the sand pink?

The pink colour comes from tiny marine organisms with red shells (foraminifera) that live on the seagrass and are broken up and washed ashore. The effect is strongest along the waterline and in small drifts on the islet, especially after windy days, rather than across the whole beach. Do not expect a uniformly pink beach like in filtered photos. In bright midday sun the colour looks paler; in softer morning or late afternoon light it shows best.

## The beach and the islet

### The main beach

The mainland beach is a wide crescent of sand facing the islet across a shallow lagoon. This is where most people stay, close to the car parks, the canteens and the rented umbrellas and sunbeds. It gets very crowded in high season, with umbrellas packed tightly along the shore.

### Walking to the islet

The islet is joined to the mainland by a sandbar that is usually just under the surface: you wade across in water up to your knees or waist, depending on wind and season. Once there, paths lead over low dunes and rocks to several smaller beaches on the south and west sides, which are much quieter than the main beach. The islet has a small lighthouse and a memorial to the Greeks killed here in 1824, when Ottoman forces massacred refugees, mainly women and children, sheltering on the islet during the War of Independence.

### Dunes, juniper and sea lilies

Behind the beaches, dunes are covered with juniper and lentisk, and in late summer the white, scented sea daffodils (sea lilies) flower in the sand. Loggerhead turtles have been recorded nesting on beaches in the wider area. All of this is fragile, which is why the protected area rules exist.

## Protected area rules (2026)

Elafonisi lies within a Natura 2000 site, and a joint ministerial decision from 2023 divides the area into protection zones. The core zone, which covers Elafonisi itself and the opposite coast, bans parking and any vehicles, including caravans and the vehicles of snack bars or watersports businesses. Since around 2023 a barrier at the beach entrance keeps cars back, and organised parking areas sit away from the sand. A monitoring committee reported in spring 2025 that the measures were helping habitats recover, but local press in August 2026 still described serious overcrowding, and calls for daily caps or timed entry continue. No visitor cap was in force when this guide was written in October 2026, but rules may tighten, so check before you go.

What this means for visitors:

- **Do not take sand, shells or plants.** Removing them is illegal and spoils the beach for everyone.
- **Park only in the official areas** and walk the last stretch; never drive onto the dunes.
- **No camping, fires or overnight stays.**
- **No motorised watersports** in the lagoon.
- **Stay on paths on the islet** and keep off the dunes and plants.
- **Take all rubbish home,** including cigarette ends.

## How to get to Elafonisi

### By car

From Chania, take the national road west towards Kissamos, then turn south through the mountains. There are two main routes: via Topolia and its short gorge, with a narrow road through a rock tunnel, or via Elos, a chestnut village with plenty of shade. Both are winding and slow, especially the final stretch. Allow 1.5 to 2 hours from Chania and more in summer traffic. Read our [tips on driving in Crete](https://theauthenticgreece.com/driving-in-crete/) before setting off. A good loop is to go one way and return the other.

### By bus

In the summer season a daily bus runs from Chania bus station to Elafonisi, leaving in the morning (around 09:00 in 2026) and returning in the late afternoon (around 16:00), with the trip taking about two hours. The stop is a short walk from the beach. Check the current timetable with the Chania bus company, as it changes each season.

### By boat from Paleochora

In summer, boats sail along the south coast from Paleochora to Elafonisi. This is a pleasant way to arrive if you are staying on the south coast, and you see the coastline that is otherwise hard to reach.

### On foot from Paleochora

Experienced walkers can follow the E4 coastal path from Paleochora to Elafonisi, a long and exposed day’s walk via the cedar forest beach of Kedrodasos. It is best in spring or autumn, never in midsummer heat.

## What else to see nearby

- **Chrysoskalitissa Monastery:** a whitewashed monastery on a rock above the sea, about 5 km north of Elafonisi. Legend says one of its steps is made of gold, visible only to the faithful.
- **Kedrodasos:** a small beach east of Elafonisi backed by ancient juniper (cedar) trees, quieter but with no facilities; reached on foot or by a rough track.
- **Topolia Gorge and the Agia Sofia cave:** a cave chapel above the road through the gorge, on the way to or from Elafonisi.
- **Elos and the chestnut villages:** shady mountain villages with tavernas, ideal for lunch on the way back.

## Elafonisi with children

The lagoon is one of the best places in Crete for small children: water so shallow it is hard to get out of your depth, warm and usually calm. Bring shade, water shoes for the rocky parts of the islet and enough food and water, as canteen choice is limited. ## Is Elafonisi worth the drive?

Honestly, it depends on when you go. In June, September and early October, or very early on a summer morning, Elafonisi is one of the loveliest beaches in Greece: shallow, luminous water, soft sand and room to walk around the islet in peace. At midday in August, with thousands of people, rows of umbrellas and full car parks, it can feel like any crowded resort beach, and the long drive back afterwards is tiring. If you can only go in high season, stay overnight in the area or arrive by 09:00, spend the morning on the islet, and leave as the coaches arrive. Combine the trip with lunch in Elos or a stop at Chrysoskalitissa so the day is about more than one beach.

## Practical tips

- **Arrive early.** The car parks fill quickly in July and August; before 09:00 is best.
- **Bring cash.** For parking, sunbeds and canteens.
- **Bring shade.** There are no natural trees on the beach, and umbrellas sell out in peak season.
- **Protect your gear.** Wind can pick up in the afternoon; keep electronics in a bag when wading to the islet.
- **Stay nearby to beat the crowds.** A night in a village near Elafonisi or in Paleochora lets you be on the beach before the day visitors.
